PPC for Manufacturers: How to Turn Paid Search Into B2B Leads

Home/Blog/Uncategorized

How manufacturers can run PPC that brings quote requests: specific keywords, Google, Microsoft and LinkedIn targeting, RFQ landing pages and tracking leads to orders.

Key takeaways

  • Gartner found B2B buyers spend only 17 percent of their buying time meeting with potential suppliers, so most research happens on their own.
  • Specific keywords such as a process plus material or a certification bring more quote requests than broad terms like manufacturing.
  • Microsoft Advertising's LinkedIn profile targeting adjusts bids by company, industry and job function but does not narrow the audience.
  • Google's offline conversion import sends closed deals from your CRM back to Google Ads so bidding can aim at orders instead of form fills.

PPC for manufacturers means paying for ads on Google, Microsoft Bing and LinkedIn that appear when engineers, buyers and plant managers search for the parts, processes or capabilities you sell, and paying only when they click. It works for manufacturers when the keywords are specific enough to attract people with a real project, the landing page answers technical questions and makes it easy to request a quote, and every lead is tracked through to a closed order so you can see which searches bring revenue. This guide covers how to set that up, channel by channel, with the rules taken from each platform’s own documentation.

Why paid search fits how industrial buyers buy

Industrial buyers do most of their research before they ever speak to a supplier. A Gartner survey of B2B buyers published in 2018 found they spend only 17 percent of their buying time meeting with potential suppliers, and that 17 percent is shared among all the suppliers they talk to, so most of the decision is shaped by what they find on their own.

Paid search puts you in front of them during that research, at the moment they type a part number, a material or a process into Google, which is something trade shows and cold outreach cannot time as precisely. It also gives you an answer within weeks, while organic rankings for competitive industrial terms can take much longer to build.

Choosing keywords that bring quote requests

The best manufacturing keywords describe a specific capability, because a person searching for a process, a tolerance or a certification usually has a project, while a person searching for a broad term may be a student or a job seeker. These longer, specific searches are often called long-tail keywords, and our guide shows free ways to find them.

Keyword type Example Typical intent
Process plus material aluminum cnc machining services Looking for a supplier
Product or part custom stainless steel enclosures Looking for a supplier or a price
Certification or standard iso 13485 contract manufacturer Shortlisting qualified suppliers
Commercial words injection molding quote, sheet metal fabrication near me Ready to request a quote
Broad category manufacturing, cnc machine Mixed, often research or jobs

Google’s keyword matching guide explains that exact match gives you the most control over who sees your ad, phrase match reaches searches that include your keyword’s meaning, and broad match reaches related searches and should be used with Smart Bidding. For a manufacturer with a modest budget, start with exact and phrase match on the specific terms above and add negative keywords early, such as jobs, careers, salary, training, used, DIY and free, because industrial terms attract a lot of job seekers and hobbyists.

Which ad channels to use

Google Ads is the starting point for almost every manufacturer, because it catches people at the moment they search, and the other channels are worth adding once search is working.

Channel Strength for manufacturers Watch out for
Google Ads search Reaches buyers searching for your exact capability Broad terms waste budget without negatives
Microsoft Advertising Search ads on Bing, with LinkedIn profile targeting by company, industry and job function LinkedIn targeting here adjusts bids only and does not narrow the audience
LinkedIn Ads Targets by company name, industry, company size, job title, seniority and skills Better at reaching named accounts than catching active demand, and LinkedIn suggests audiences above 50,000 for Sponsored Content
Remarketing (Google, LinkedIn) Brings back engineers who visited a spec page and left Needs enough site traffic to build a list

The Microsoft detail comes from its LinkedIn profile targeting help page, which says the feature works as “bid only” and is available in Search, Shopping, Audience and Performance Max campaigns, so it is useful for bidding more when a searcher works in your target industry. The LinkedIn options and audience size guidance come from LinkedIn’s targeting best practices, which also suggests using no more than two or three targeting facets when starting out. LinkedIn is the best fit for account-based campaigns, where you upload a list of target companies and show ads only to people who work there.

Landing pages that turn clicks into RFQs

A manufacturing ad should never send people to the home page, because an engineer who searched for a specific process wants to confirm in seconds that you do it, to the tolerances and volumes they need. Build one landing page per capability, and give it the details buyers check before they ask for a quote.

  • Capabilities stated as numbers, such as materials, tolerances, part sizes, minimum order quantities and lead times.
  • Certifications and industries served, with the certificate names written out so they match what buyers search.
  • Photos of real parts and your shop floor rather than stock images.
  • A short RFQ form that accepts drawing or CAD file uploads, with only the fields your estimators actually need.
  • A phone number and the name of the person who will reply, plus how fast you reply.

Tracking leads all the way to closed orders

Manufacturing sales cycles are long, and a form fill can take months to become a purchase order, so counting form fills alone will push your budget toward whatever produces the most inquiries, not the most revenue. Google’s offline conversion import fixes this by saving the Google click ID with each lead in your CRM and sending it back to Google Ads when the lead becomes a qualified opportunity or a sale. Enhanced conversions for leads adds hashed customer data such as email addresses to improve matching, and Google reports a median 10 percent increase in conversions for advertisers who use first-party data with click IDs. Since June 15, 2026, Google has been moving these uploads from the Google Ads API to its Data Manager API, which matters for anyone with a custom CRM integration.

Once closed deals flow back into Google Ads, you can see which keywords bring orders, cut the ones that only bring tire-kickers and let Smart Bidding aim at revenue. Smart Bidding runs on Google’s machine learning, and our post on how AI is used in marketing covers where else this kind of automation helps. Speed matters on the sales side too, and an RFQ answered the same day will usually beat one answered next week, however good the ad was.

Questions we get asked about PPC for manufacturers

How much should a manufacturer spend on PPC?

There is no standard figure, because click prices vary widely by process and region. A practical way to set a test budget is to look up the cost per click for your main keywords in Google Keyword Planner, multiply by the number of clicks you need to judge results, at least a few hundred, and run that for two to three months.

Is PPC or SEO better for a manufacturing company?

Both, because they work on different timelines. PPC brings in quote requests within weeks and shows which keywords lead to orders, and SEO builds rankings for those proven keywords so you pay less per lead over time. If you are new to the organic side, our explainer on what SEO involves for a business covers the basics.

Does LinkedIn advertising work for manufacturers?

It works best for reaching a defined list of target accounts and job titles, such as procurement managers at medical device companies, rather than for catching demand. For most manufacturers we would start with Google search, where buyers are already looking, and add LinkedIn for account-based campaigns once lead tracking is in place.

Is PPC in manufacturing the same as production planning and control?

PPC in manufacturing marketing means pay-per-click advertising, where you pay each time someone clicks your ad, while PPC on the factory floor usually stands for production planning and control, the process of scheduling materials, machines and labor to meet orders. This guide is about the advertising meaning, which helps a manufacturer win new orders.

How long does it take for PPC to work for a manufacturer?

PPC for a manufacturer usually shows early signals within the first few weeks, such as which search terms trigger your ads and which landing pages get quote requests, but judging it on revenue takes at least one full sales cycle, which can be several months for custom parts. Plan a budget for two to three months before deciding whether to scale up or stop.

Should manufacturers advertise on Amazon?

Manufacturers that sell standard, ready-to-ship products can benefit from Amazon ads, because many business and consumer buyers search Amazon directly for parts, tools and supplies, while custom or made-to-order manufacturing usually fits Google search better. Start with a product listing that answers the same technical questions as your landing pages, since ads cannot fix a thin listing.

If you do list there, our beginner’s guide to Amazon PPC walks through ad types, targeting and bids.

Should a manufacturer run PPC in-house or hire an agency?

A manufacturer can run PPC in-house when someone on staff has a few hours each week to review search terms, add negative keywords and follow up on leads, while an agency makes more sense when the account spans several channels or needs offline conversion tracking connected to the CRM. Either way, whoever runs it should review leads with sales every month.
